Benalla was well represented at the Hockey Victoria Senior Country Championships during the long weekend, thanks to four local women’s efforts.
Benalla Hockey Club’s Lee Manning, Chrissy Purcell, Sharon Watkins and Amy Welsh all playing in the women’s competition in Geelong.
During the three days, the girls competed for Goulburn Valley representative teams, with Purcell and Welsh competing in the A1 grade, and Manning, Watkins and Welsh playing in the A2 grade team.
Purcell and Welsh played well in various positions in the forward line, with Welsh also playing in defence.
Purcell was the top goal scorer for the team, scoring the first goal against USA and two against West Victoria.
Manning as a half back, Watkins as wing and Welsh as an inner all played excellently, with some great defence and forward plays.
The A1 team had a great competition, drawing against Central Victoria 1-1 and beating East Gippsland 2-0 on Saturday.
The side went on to beat USA 3-2, and Ballarat 4-1, before losing to Geelong 3-0 on Sunday.
This meant the side came fourth on the ladder. The side’s 2-1 loss to Central Victoria on Monday caused the A1 grade to miss out on the grand final.
The A2 team played up a grade, with many veterans and juniors in the team. They held their own in the competition, and all played a great team game.
But the side lost its first match 2-1 against Wimmera, before drawing 1-1 with Latrobe Valley on Saturday.
They went on to lose 4-0 against Geelong and 3-0 against Sunraysia on Sunday, coming fifth in the competition.
They lost 3-0 against the A1 team East Gippsland on Monday.
All of Benalla’s teams play in Shepparton this Saturday, with the Under-13s at 10am against SYC Blue, Under-15s at 11am against SYC, and the seniors play Echuca at 12.30pm for the Men’s game and 2pm for the Women.
