Seven players from the fledgling Yarrawonga Youth Girls football team have been named on the invitation list for the 2017 AFL NE Border Bushrangers Talent ID Program.
Annie Robilliard, Ella Jones, Erica Montgomery, Evita Williams, Jenna Knight, Sarah Ryan and Tayla Sampson have been invited to participate in the first stage of the selection process for the 2017 V/Line Cup Squad for under 16 girls.
Pigeons Youth Girls Coach Hayley Durnford said she was very excited for the girls.
“Particularly for the likes of Ella Jones who has only just started playing football and only played three games for the Pigeons, I am super excited for them,” she said.
“All our girls are just so eager to learn the skills of football and here we have some of our younger girls given the opportunity to push themselves that bit harder in this program.
“I have enjoyed working with the girls who continue to improve week to week, they are a great bunch of girls.”
Meet the girls
Annie Robilliard – one of five Robilliard kids, Annie has watched her siblings come through junior football and netball and now has the opportunity to play the sport of her choice. She is a selfless player who is persistent and hardworking in the forward lines.
Ella Jones – new to the game and to the YFNC, Ella is described as an ‘engine’ who can run all day around the midfield. She is a powerhouse with an extremely competitive nature.
Erica Montgomery – a netballer from Tungamah, Erica does her best work at full back and has a never give up attitude and strengthens the Pigeons back line.
Evita Williams – a keen sportswoman and being the only girl with three brothers, Evita has spent many days watching her brother Trent play footy and she now has her turn. A strong defender, hardworking across the field and committed to her game and has laid some of the best tackles this season.
Jenna Knight – a coach’s asset as Jenna is handy both in the forward or the backline and can play multiple positions. Like any good footballer she puts her body on the line and tackles hard.
Sarah Ryan – Sarah competes as hard if not harder than any of the boys. A defender, she just loves the game and is as tough as nails. No wonder really - Sarah is the granddaughter of Pigeons 1959 premiership player and Fitzroy player, the late Noel Ryan who would be as proud as punch of Sarah’s attitude to her game.
Tayla Sampson – also from Tungamah, Tayla is the perfect fit in defence. She’s persistent at the ball and competes well on the ground and in the air.
Whatever the outcome as the V/Line Cup selection process unfolds, the Yarrawonga Football Netball Club wishes these girls all the best.
