‘We’re not getting value for money’

July 13, 2017

Tug of War: Benalla Aero Club Instructor Ronald Olson and student, Amelia Mentiplay-Smith having to drag the plane out of the hanger.

Benalla Rural City Council may well rue the day it decided to increase the airfield’s hangar leases sixfold from 75¢ to $5 per square metre.

The Ensign was again contacted to come out to the airfield to witness what fliers say isn’t good enough for that price.

After the driest June on record, last week’s rain very quickly saw the airfield become water logged.

Benalla Aero Club instructor Ronald Olson said it was becoming extremely difficult for people to get their planes in and out of the hangars as it had to be done with the engine off by simply pushing the planes.

‘‘This usually floods here,’’ Mr Olson said.

‘‘In a heavy rain there’s more water than this and you virtually cannot get your aeroplane out.

‘‘This plane has to be moved to another hangar because we can’t push it in and out of the water.

‘‘The inconvenience, the problems we have here, we’re just not getting value for money.’’
