University back in class

Deniliquin and district’s U3A (University of the Third Age) will begin term three on Monday, with the first session a chance to learn more about technology.

The existing iPad class has been extended to also include iPhone instruction, and will be led by June Moon, Ann Sinclair and Jan Cook. It is held every Monday from 2pm to 4pm.

Tai Chi is also usually held on Monday, but will not return until July 24.

U3A program coordinator Helen Burnham said the class would welcome new members before the start date.

Other weekly activities throughout the term will include sessions on meditation, poetry and play reading, as well as various games, general discussion groups and an Italian lesson.

‘‘A new course, guided meditation, will commence on Tuesdays from 10am to 11am, and will be run by Irene Duffy,’’ Mrs Burnham said.

‘‘The games morning on Thursday from 10am to noon will resume this term for another trial.

‘‘Games are supplied but the group is always happy for you to bring along your favourite game to teach the members.

‘‘Please let all your friends know about the classes that are available and remind them that if they’re not members, they may attend three sessions of one or varied activities before having to join.

‘‘Also let me know if there are any new courses you would like me to find leaders for, or if you would like to lead a course.’’

The U3A’s timetable also includes a monthly book club — first Thursday of the month from 10am to 11am — and monthly guest speakers on the third Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 3pm.

‘‘The July 26 guest speaker is Sherryn Hill from Intereach who will talk about ‘Women on the Land’, and on August 23 is Connie Haines on ‘Walking the Camino’.’’

Short course sessions and times are yet to be confirmed, but are expected to be held from 2pm to 4pm on Fridays or 1pm to 3pm Tuesdays.

Not a ‘university’ or academic institution of any sort, U3A is simply a fun and mentally stimulating group in which members determine what courses are run.

It specifically caters for ‘over fifties’ and activities are held at varying times each weekday at the Intereach Neighborhood Centre.
