MICK Baker is a creative man.
And after putting off his dream for many years, he is finally a published author, which he puts down to Crocodile Dundee.
‘‘About 18 months ago I was watching Crocodile Dundee, the one where he goes to America, and I was thinking he is such an unrealistic representation of an Australian man,’’ Mick laughed.
‘‘Americans might think we are all like that — and we definitely aren’t.’’
So he put down the novel he was writing and began work on the idea that is now a finished product called Romance Amongst The Roses: The rebirth of Dennis Brownfield.
‘‘I had started writing another story about a country football team battling with drugs but then this idea came to me and it just went from there,’’ Mick said.
‘‘The way it ended out was nothing like I had imagined but I am really excited about it.
‘‘My writing changes as I go and I don’t really know what is going to happen to the characters until I write them.’’
The Rochester Wine Tavern owner said although the novel is a romance, it doesn’t follow the normal plot of a romance novel.
‘‘It doesn’t go about romance the way you expect,’’ he said.
‘‘It follows Dennis Bloomfield over to America to spend time with his son and daughter-in-law after losing his wife to cancer.’’
The novel has everything from the Ellen DeGeneres Show and the Tyler Rose Festival to intimate love scenes and adventure.
‘‘It is just brutally honest,’’ Mick said.
‘‘A lot of it is very factual and I used the beauty of Google Maps to ensure all of the places they went were real.
‘‘An anonymous reviewer said it was a sexy page turner — so that is a good sign.’’
Currently Romance Amongst The Roses is available on Kindle and Amazon.
‘‘We will have hard copies here very soon.’’
Copies will be available for purchase from the Rochester Wine Tavern, Rochester Newsagency, Elmore Newsagency and Collins Booksellers Echuca.
‘‘I hope our community can get behind it so I might be able to entice a publishing company to publish it or my next book,’’ Mick said.
