Former locals Graeme and Robyn Snape travelled almost 350km to attend the Deniliquin District Veteran & Vintage Car Club celebrations over the weekend.
Now based in Cootamundra, the pair first joined the club in 1976 after moving to Deniliquin from Sydney.
‘‘We joined because we’re both interested in cars, and it’s a great social scene to interact with people with the same interests,’’ Mrs Snape said.
After nine years in Deniliquin, Mr and Mrs Snape moved on from Deniliquin and relocated to Ballina.
Despite being so far away, the pair said they wanted to maintain their connections with the local car club.
‘‘We stay in touch with a lot of our friends we met from the club, and it’s great to see people as enthusiastic as they were in 1980,’’ Mrs Snape said.
‘‘This is the second time this year we’ve come back to visit.’’
Mr and Mrs Snape are now members of the Cootamundra Antique Motor Club, and have three antique vehicles — a 1973 Alfa Romeo Spider, a 1968 Alfa Romeo Veloce Sprint and a 1983 Porsche 944. The pair were unfortunately not able to bring any of their prized cars with them for Sunday’s display.
Car club rally director Val Maher said one of the weekend’s highlights was catching up with returning club members.
‘‘It’s great to have past members attend because they are an important part of the club’s history,’’ she said.
