A strong commitment to the Deniliquin District Veteran & Vintage Car Club has seen John Dickson awarded with a life membership.
Mr Dickson was honoured with life membership at the club’s 50th birthday dinner celebrations at the Deniliquin RSL Club on Saturday evening.
He first joined the club in 1993, and said he was ‘‘very humbled’’ by the recognition.
‘‘Life memberships are pretty uncommon, so it’s quite special to be awarded one,’’ Mr Dickson said.
‘‘I’ve always had an interest in machinery, and when I had more time I started doing up old cars — that’s when I decided to join the car club.’’
Mr Dickson’s car collection features a 1966 Jaguar Mark ten, a 1976 Cadillac two-door coupe, a 1976 Lincoln two-door coupe, a 1970s Mazda and a 1986 Rolls-Royce, which made an appearance at the club’s anniversary weekend show ‘n’ shine on Sunday morning.
‘‘I bought the Rolls-Royce about five years ago from a Melbourne dealer that specialises in up-market European cars,’’ Mr Dickson said.
‘‘I’ve had the Cadillac and Lincoln for nearly 20 years now.
‘‘I used to have eleven or twelve cars, but I’ve narrowed it down to seven to make time for my other hobbies.’’
Mr Dickson said after 24 years he still enjoys being a member of the club.
‘‘I like being a part of the club because you meet people with compatible interests, and it’s something to do,’’ he said.
