I wish to respectfully draw your readers’ attention to the article “$10m is for new council” published in last Wednesday’s (August 2, 2017) edition of the Southern Riverina News.
The article commences: Murrumbidgee Council has deferred spending its $10 million in infrastructure funding until a newly elected council is in place.
The decision to hold off spending the combined Stronger Community Major Projects and Stronger Country Communities allocations “has its roots in democracy”, according to council general manger Craig Moffitt.
He says the decision on where it will be best spent should be up to the community and their elected representatives.
As both a local resident and a candidate for election to the new Edward River Council, I await with interest an indication of whether Mr Adam McSwain, the General Manager of Edward River Council, will demonstrate an appreciation of the “roots of democracy” equal to his nearby peer GM.
