It will be cause for celebration this weekend when Heathcote Football Netball Club celebrates 50 years. Pictured is Jake Condon showing his skill earlier this season.

HEATHCOTE Football Netball Club is turning 50 this weekend and the committee is keen to celebrate in style.

Over three big days, the club plans to welcome past and present members to Barrack Reserve to remember the old days and enjoy what the club has become.

The drawcard of the celebration will be a meal on Saturday night and auction of commemorative football jumpers and the renowned Heathcote Saints Shiraz.

The club was formed after Heathcote’s two football teams — North and Rovers — disbanded on January 13, 1967.

The McIvor Times at the time reported the disbanding was a formality with ‘‘very few words spoken against the decision of having one team in Heathcote’’.

A public meeting was held two weeks later for the purpose of forming one united club.

Alan Smith was elected the first president and Syd Wickham was elected secretary.

Current president Andrew Conforti said he was hoping for more than 200 people at the Saturday night function.

‘‘Fifty years of footy and netball is a great achievement. We hope people will come along for a great night out,’’ he said.

‘‘A lot of talent has come through the club and we want to celebrate all the work people have put in.

‘‘It’s healthy to have a club like this in the community. It’s brought a lot of joy to people over the years ‘‘Some people have been involved in the club for the entire 50 years. It’s important to recognise those people and everyone who has helped the club over the years.’’

It’s all happening Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Pigeon Park, Heathcote.

There will be finger food and drinks on Friday night from 6.30pm and the official function will follow the home game on Saturday from 6.30pm.

This will be followed by lunch and drinks on Sunday from 11am.

Cost for the Saturday night function is $50 for adults, $20 for 11-17-year-olds and free for 10 years and under.
