Take a break, admire scenery

August 11, 2017

Two of the scenic locations the TAC encourgages drivers to stop at on the way to and from Victoria's ski fields. This is Noojee Trestle Bridge (on the way to Mt Baw Baw).

If you’re planning on hitting the slopes this year, the TAC has your back.

They have mapped out 24 locations on route to and from Victoria’s ski fields to help people plan their trip around taking rest stops and arriving safely.

The rest-stop locations have been chosen as part of the TAC’s new Breakpoint campaign, encouraging drivers to take a break when driving long distances to the mountains.

TAC road safety manager Samantha Buckis said with drowsy driving contributing to about one-in-four fatalities on Victorian roads, it was important that drivers take a break.

‘‘Huge numbers of people embark on road trips to and from Victoria’s ski resorts each season and if you’re travelling long distances it’s important to take regular breaks,’’ she said.

The TAC has chosen interesting locations and attractions for drivers to stop at on route to Mt Buller, Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Mt Baw Baw and Lake Mountain.

‘‘We have chosen these locations to make the road trip more enjoyable and for drivers to have a scenic view to stop at, get out of the car, freshen up and swap drivers if possible,’’ Ms Buckis said.

The TAC is encouraging anyone travelling to and from the snow to check out the Breakpoint website and TAC Instagram account before they leave home to help plan their journey.

‘‘We’re asking drivers to make a choice not to drive when tired and if they’re feeling drowsy to stop and take in some of the best scenery Victoria has to offer on the way to the mountains,’’ Ms Buckis said.

‘‘Every safe road trip starts with a good night’s sleep the night before and a plan that includes regular breaks on the way to your destination, and on the way home, to stretch the legs or even take a power nap.’’
