Deni Meals on Wheels has proven an invaluable service for the community, and this year the local organisation celebrates its 50th birthday.

In 2017, the Meals on Wheels organisation — which also has posts throughout the United Kingdom, United States, Ireland and Canada — delivers home-style meals to 40 Deniliquin locals, allowing these clients to stay in the comfort of their own homes and maintain their independence.

Deni Meals on Wheels coordinator Michelle Hand-Beehag says the organisation is ‘‘more than just a meal’’.

‘‘Meals on Wheels is all about providing a service to help people stay at home,’’ she said.

‘‘It’s all about our clients, and we’re not just a preparation and delivery service.

‘‘Every visit people can expect to be greeted by friendly volunteers who are happy to have a chat and make sure our clients are managing.’’

Ms Hand-Beehag said the organisation can provide lifestyle meals for ‘‘all situations’’.

‘‘You don’t have to be elderly and stuck at home to benefit from Meals on Wheels,’’ she said.

‘‘It’s great for new mums with babies and busy business people — just about anyone.

‘‘We’ve found that most of our volunteers go on to become clients, which shows it’s a trusted service and well run.’’

Offering a rotating menu with more than 30 meals, popular dishes include roast Wednesday and fish Friday, as well as lasagne, Irish stew, curries and sweet and sour pork.

The nutritionally-balanced meals are delivered via two daily runs, however pick up of frozen meals is also available.

‘‘All of the food is freshly cooked and served hot by Kurrajong Catering, which supports their clients to volunteer within the community,’’ Ms Hand-Beehag said.

‘‘Kurrajong also conduct seven delivery runs a month, which is absolutely fantastic.’’

Ms Hand-Beehag said the long-time local service aims to be ‘‘as simple as possible’’, allowing clients to live at ease in their own home.

‘‘They are generous portions, too, so for small eaters they can eat half one day and the other half the next,’’ she said.

‘‘We understand every client is different and we’re here to look after them, so we can adapt to most needs within reason.’’
