A key contractor for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games has had a restriction applied to its licence.

Queensland's construction watchdog has applied a restriction to the building licence of a key contractor for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission issued the restriction to Grocon Constructors on Tuesday, prohibiting the company from providing tenders or quotes or taking up new contracts for building work until notified.

It is unclear what the restriction will mean for the Commonwealth Games athletes' village, which Grocon is in charge of delivering before the event next April but it's believed to be related to financial concerns.
