GIRGARRE’S Jan Smith and Doc McDonald are defying expectations.

When they first proposed the idea for the Gargarro Regional Botanic Gardens in Girgarre’s town centre, Jan said many were sceptical.

“People would often say, ‘That’s not going to happen,’” she said.

“But now that we’re actually getting the ball rolling, they’re starting to realise how fair dinkum we are. And people are getting excited.”

The massive garden will breathe new life into the 9.9ha donated by Heinz in 2012 after it announced the Girgarre plant closure.

Further, it will deliver social, economic, educational and environmental benefits to the region through the attraction of visitors and conducting of events.

But to see this dream flourish, the Girgarre Development Committee (GDC) will need many more hands – particularly those with green thumbs – on board.

Tomorrow night, a Friends of the Garden group for Gargarro will officially kick off.

And GDC would like to see you there.

“We would love people with all different skill sets, from various walks of life,” Doc said.

“Anyone who has an interest in the future of the garden should come along.

“Friends of the garden groups have always been an integral part of gardens across the state. As a member, you will volunteer your time to raise funds and look after the overall maintenance of the garden.”

Jan said each member of the group would be leaving a lasting imprint on Girgarre.

“Very little we do in life leaves such a real, tangible legacy to the time we spent here as this garden will,” she said.

“The development and maintenance of this garden will be such a rewarding experience for those involved.

“Everyone is welcome to come tomorrow night and just check out what we’re up to. I think they will be really excited to get on board.”

The first Friends of the Garden group meeting will be held on Thursday, September 14 from 7.30pm at the Memorial Hall.
