Acton’s work on show

September 13, 2017

Celebrated artist, fashion designer, and Benalla native Prue Acton OBE will present a new exhibition, Excitement of Colour, at Benalla Art Gallery, opening September 29.

Known as Australia’s golden girl of fashion, Prue describes herself as an artist who chose to work in the field of fashion.

She started working in the industry in the early ’60s, and rapidly became known as one of Australia’s best designers.

Benalla Art Gallery director Bryony Nainby said the exhibition comprised a recent collection of still lives and flowers recently painted in her coastal bush home and studio.

‘‘Prue was born in 1943 in Benalla. She spent many years in the fashion industry and won several awards,’’ Ms Nainby said.

‘‘During the 1980s she returned to her first love, painting, continuing her study under the mentorship of Clifton Pugh and partner, Merv Moriarty.’’

For Acton, observation and aesthetics are powerful tools to explore the very nature of life.

‘‘The beauty of colour is and always has been my quest,’’ she said.

‘‘As an artist, as a colourist, I make works that I hope convey the colour and the beauty of the world around us.’’

Former Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Winsome McCaughey AO is guest speaker at the official exhibition launch at 3pm on October7.

Prue Acton will host an ‘‘Artist talk’’ on October 8 at 10am in the Simpson Gallery, Benalla Art Gallery.

Merv Moriarty will join Prue on October 8, and October 9 to host a ‘‘colour relationship’’ workshop.

The workshop will follow Prue’s artist talk on October 8, the second session will begin at 10am the following day.

The exhibition will be at the Benalla Art Gallery from September 29 until November26.

The Benalla Art Gallery is open from 10am to 5pm Wednesday to Monday.
