Swans fly into another grand final

Teagan McCarthy just misses the rebound in the goal ring for Avenel.

Bec Bath and Ros Rutherford were formidable in defence for Avenel’s B-grade in their win on Saturday.

Avenel has plenty to celebrate after knocking off Merrigum on Saturday to go through to its third consecutive grand final.

The Swans continued their undefeated run — which has now lasted three seasons — as they charged home for a 36-goal victory.

The unfamiliar court at Stanhope was no deterrent for goalers Teagan McCarthy and Sarah Brown, with the pair quick to establish and build a clearly unassailable lead thanks to outstanding feed from Avenel’s midcourters.

Captain Kelly Smith led the Swans’ midcourt, which included Gen Gordon, Libby Dawson, Brooke Maher and Sarah D’Orria, and their various combinations created great linking play and drive out of defence.

Bec Bath was named best on court for her incredible work rate and tight defensive play in goal-defence.

Bath, alongside fellow defender Ros Rutherford, impressively held the Merrigum goalers to just 20 goals for the entire match.

Avenel will face the winner of next week’s preliminary final between Merrigum and Tallygaroopna.
