Under-10 Tigers take on Strikers

On Saturday, the under-10s took on Strikers in Shepparton. The Tigers played well as a team and moved the ball well backing each other up and creating some great plays.

They fought hard all game, but the Strikers managed to push through and score a goal in the last five minutes of the game. Ending the game Strikers 1 – Benalla nil.

The Tigers are growing well together as a team and will soon be winning games without a doubt.

Next week under-10s have the bye.

Under-16s had the bye this week. Next week they play Echuca/Mooroopna at 11am in Shepparton.

Benalla women women were due to play Shepparton Strikers at home, however, Strikers forfeited. Next week B Women play at home against Mooroopna at 2pm.

B Men were also due to play Shepparton Strikers at home, however the Strikers men team also forfeited. Next Saturday, Benalla men play at home against Mooroopna at 3.30pm.

In a club first, Benalla Hockey Club entered an under-10 six-a-side team on Saturday, April 14.

First time competitive players, Madeline and Xavier Watson, Jacinta Woodward, Ayush Singh, Oliver and Noah Gillies, and Ben and Zac Fennell travelled to Shepparton to take on Mooroopna.

In a matter of minutes Oliver pushed through Mooroopna’s defence scoring the first goal. Mooroopna countered by pushing forward, however, Madeline, Xavier and Noah held strong cutting off any goal shots.

Jacinta, Ben and Zac’s clean passing opened up the field for Oliver to score the second goal.

Despite Mooroopna’s constant attacking during the second half, Zac and Noah held them off with some beautiful saves, however, Mooroopna’s persistence eventually paid off.

Ayush, Ben and Xavier created great plays to keep Mooroopna on their toes. There were some extremely close shots at goal with Ayush and Noah narrowly missing.

Final score saw the Tigers lose 3-2, with spectators proud of the game and the sportsmanship displayed.

The under-16 Tigers braved cold, wet and windy conditions in their season opener. Down a couple of key players, they struggled against the full-strength Mooroopna and finished with a 5-0 loss. Umpire team votes: Alex Dowe 3, Darcy Tyquin 2, Sean Stanley 1.

Benalla’s B Men fielded with 10 players at home to Euroa in wet conditions.

The game was called Benalla 3: Euroa 0, with 20 minutes to go in the second half.

Goal scorers were BJ Trevaskis and Alex Dowe.

Umpire votes: BJ Trevaskis 3, Ankur Singh 2, Marty Gillies 1.

B Women had the bye.

Junior Development starts Thursday, 4.30pm, followed by training.
