Coming off the back of winning an Australian Scooter Association’s Victorian title, Benalla’s Mitchell Young claimed second place in an impressive performance at the nationals in Sydney.
The young local competed in the open category, coming up against almost 30 other competitors all showcasing their best scooter skills.
Mitchell said he was ‘‘beyond happy’’ with the way he rode on the day.
‘‘It was a lot of competition on the day but somehow I pulled off second, which I was quite happy with,’’ Mitchell said.
‘‘My first run was horrible but you get two turns so I was lucky for that. My second run was a lot better than my first.’’
However, this was not the first time Mitchell had placed at a national event, coming third in the under-16s in Melbourne last year.
The future looks bright for Mitchell, who has also recently been contracted to a scooter brand.
‘‘I just got my contract to ride for Team District, which is a scooter brand that will help me out with scooter parts and stuff,’’ he said.
Mitchell also credits his success to the help he received from the Benalla Young Sportsperson Trust and the Tomorrow Today foundation in helping him cover the costs of competing.
‘‘It was beyond helpful, I don’t know if I could have done much without them,’’ he said.
Although Mitchell has been riding scooters since before he can remember, he’s not showing any signs of slowing down.
‘‘The pros get to go to Barcelona, hopefully I’ll get to that stage at some point, but you can only hope,’’ he said.
