The fifth round of the Martha Challen Cup competition was played on Sunday.
Twelve players took part, and Allan Tonta was the only three game winner. He won the round and the three points with 23 hoops.
Three players won two games. Gwen Pearn scored 25 hoops, Mary James 23 and Carol Borella 21.
Andy Davis had three successful jump shots, and Jill Tainsh had one.
In the GVCA Golf Croquet Pennant competition last week, the Deni Diamonds had a good win over Numurkah Blues — nine games, 75 hoops to three games, 55 hoops.
At Numurkah, a very close match resulted in a win for the Deni Gems. At six games all, it came down to hoops with Deni scoring 68 to Numurkah’s 64.
On October 19, the Deni Gems are at home against Echuca-Moama Greens. The Diamonds have the bye.
Seventeen players lined up for croquet on Wednesday. John James was the only three game winner, with a great score of 28 hoops.
Six players had good scores despite losing one game. Dors Peterson had 24, Allan Tonta 22, Theo Walle and Brad Fawns each had 21 hoops and Jill and John Tainsh both had 20 hoops.
Heather Douglas, Lorraine Honeyman and Marg Telford each ran a handy hoop-in-one.
There were eight successful jump shots for the day — Bevis Pearn, John James and Allan Tonta all had two each, and Dors Peterson and Brad Fawns had one each.
The shot of the day went to John James. He scored a beautiful hoop right from the base line.
Players are reminded that Wednesday’s play now commences at 9am, for a 9.30am start. If you are likely to be late, please ring someone to have your name go in the draw.
Sunday’s play remains at 12.30pm for a 1pm start.
The Australian Open Golf Croquet Nationals will be played at Deniliquin from November 6 to 10.
