Campaign to cut the hassles

By Riverine Herald

EIGHT Mathoura and Echuca friends will shave their heads later this month to help out a mate.

Scott Vesty has organised Shave for a Mate on May 20 as a fundraiser for Mathoura grandfather Stephen Allingham who is battling terminal prostate cancer.

And Scott, as well as Bobby Walldren, Leesa Ireland, Andrew Cook, Lorraine Potter, Melanie Duffy, Jeremy Pearson and Janelle Keech, will be shaving their heads in support of their mate.

The 52-year-old was given a diagnosis of advanced metastatic prostate cancer in January last year.

With a body scan showing the cancer had spread to his bones, Stephen was given another five to seven years with treatment.

Scott said Stephen and wife Veronica were a wonderful couple going through a tough time.

‘‘Stephen will eventually have to stop working and so the money we raise will help pay the bills and accommodation when he has to go to Melbourne for treatment,’’ he said. ‘‘Hopefully it gives them a bit of peace of mind.’’

The fundraiser will be held at the Mathoura Football Club rooms from 10.30am to 4pm on May 20.

Scott said he had received donations from local businesses to be auctioned off, ranging from hotel meal vouchers, turf, hay bales, a basketball signed by Matthew Dellavedova, $500 worth of tyres with tyre fitting and a tradies pack including a day’s labour by three builders, a painter and landscaper.

Wicked Game Hire has also donated $1500 worth of children’s activities, including sumo wrestling suits and a jumping castle, to be used on the day.

Just4Fun has donated a photobooth for the event where people can take photos and leave a video message for Stephen and Veronica.

The event will also include a DJ and barbecue lunch, with the football club running the canteen.

The fundraiser will be held at the Mathoura Football Club rooms from 10.30am to 4pm.

There will be an auction, as well as a DJ, children’s activities, barbecue lunch and canteen.
