United shared the Blues around

PICOLA United is back to its winning ways after thrashing Jerilderie away from home.

United won by 104 points, bouncing back from the previous weekend’s loss to Blighty.

But coach John Varcoe said there is still more to come from his troops, and they must put together four-quarter performances.

The win sends United to third on the Picola and District Football League ladder, with four wins and a loss, level on points with the side that beat them.

Varcoe said although Jerilderie is struggling this year, he was pleased to see his side open up the ground and exploit the opposition’s weaknesses.

‘‘It was a solid performance but I think we can play a lot better. At the moment we could be more consistent in all aspects.

‘‘When we moved the ball we moved it well, but at times we didn’t handle it as cleanly as we would have liked, and with the wind being so strong at times we struggled.

‘‘It’s about being able to adapt and we did it well. They had the strong breeze in the first quarter, and they came to play early and contested game,’’ he said.

The side had nine goal kickers on the day, sharing in 19 goals and 18 behinds.

‘‘When we started to open up a bit of a gap we played well and were able to open up the ground a bit more and show our team work.

‘‘It was great to get a spread of goal kickers, we’re not looking for one person to kick goals. We applied pressure and held our marks well, although we could have kicked better from set shots,’’ he said.

This week brings a new challenger in the form of newly-included Katamatite — a side Picola has not played in recent years.

Varcoe said his side relished the chance to record back to back wins against the side.

‘‘Every week there are plenty of challenges, they’re a new side into the competition, and so they’re a bit of an unknown. They have some quality players, but we want to do it at our home ground and hope to put up a strong performance,’’ he said.

Katamatite have had a tricky start to life in the new league, with two wins and four losses, sitting ninth from 13 teams.

That match will be played in Picola, at 2.05pm first bounce.
