Jumping through Hoops to be best in scouts, cubs

November 15, 2017

Siblings Will and Jessica Hooper have won top awards for Scouts and Cubs.

THEIR motto is ‘‘be prepared’’ — but nothing could have prepared the Hooper siblings for the massive cubs and scouts awards they recently received on the same night.

Jessica Hooper, 10, was the second girl from the district to be granted the Grey Wolf Award — the highest honour in the cubs section.

And 14-year-old Will Hooper was not to be left behind, scooping the scouts top honour — the Australian Scout Medallion with the Adventurer Cord Level.

These accolades represented years of hard work for the two adventurers.

Jessica took three and a half years to achieve the cubs levels involved, while Will slotted four and a half years to complete all levels in scouting.

The siblings represented a small percentage of cubs and scouts that achieve these top awards.

‘‘They’ve both had to work very hard over a number of years to get these awards,’’ Kyabram Scouts leader Cath Pell said.

‘‘The last Grey Wolf Award we achieved was in 2012, while the last Australian Scout Medallion was in 2015.

‘‘This makes us very proud. It’s a massive achievement.’’

Cath said Kyabram Scouts were always in need of more leaders to see members like Jessica and Will continue to climb through the ranks.

‘‘With more adult volunteers, we can have many more awards opportunities like these,’’ she said.

‘‘Otherwise we struggle to accommodate all the kids in Ky who want to get involved.’’
