Trial for man on Echuca sex charges

By Riverine Herald

AN ECHUCA man accused of a sexual assault in Hare St almost two years ago has been ordered to stand trial.

Erh-Chieh Chuang, 28, appeared in Bendigo Magistrates Court on Thursday, May 3 charged with sexual assault-related offences.

The matter was directed for trial on May 29 at Melbourne County Court.

Chuang’s charges relate to an alleged incident at a Hare St business on September 20, 2016.

Bendigo’s Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team interviewed and charged Chuang on January 11.

He is on bail.

A DRUNK driver who blew more than four times the limit has been taken off the road for almost two years.

Benjamin John Atkins, 53, pleaded guilty in Echuca Magistrates Court on Tuesday, may 8.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Dave Rennie told the court Atkins was stopped for a breath test in Mellis St, Kyabram, at 11.22pm on March 4, recording a blood alcohol concentration of 0.210.

He had initially told police that he had consumed only six cans of light beer at his home between 2pm and 11pm.

However, in court Atkins admitted it was more like 15 cans.

Magistrate John Murphy said it was obvious that the contractor had a ‘‘grog problem’’.

‘‘With that much grog in your system, you’re a candidate for killing someone,’’ he said.

Mr Murphy convicted and fined Atkins $750 and cancelled his licence for 21 months.

‘‘Do something about your drinking otherwise you’ll never get your licence back,’’ he said.
