Club hit for six by vandals

December 06, 2017

BAMAWM Lockington United Cricket Club is appalled after being attacked by mindless vandals.

Hundreds of dollars in damage was caused when one of the club’s pitch covers was destroyed between Saturday night and Monday morning last week.

Club president Paul Colbert said it was disappointing this sort of targeted vandalism could occur in a small community.

‘‘These lovely people have clearly gone out of their way to cause as much damage as possible,’’ he said.

‘‘The covers have been in use for a number of years and materials and labour would have been donated by locals in regards to their manufacturing.

‘‘Our great club is run and maintained by volunteers that put in ridiculous hours to provide a great facility for the community. We don’t deserve this.’’

Mr Colbert said this was the first time anything like this had occurred at the club.

‘‘It affects our club greatly as we don’t get any financial support from the shire,’’ he said.

‘‘We’re considered a private facility. Everything we do, whether it be mowing the grounds or upgrading facilities is 100 per cent at our cost and carried out by dedicated volunteers,’’ he said.

‘‘We work extremely hard throughout the year to raise funds.’’

The vandalism has been reported to Echuca police who are investigating.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact them on 54831500 or Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
