Safety first at Tallarook barbecue

December 06, 2017

Mitchell Shire Council, supported by emergency services, will hold an information event in Tallarook on Wednesday about fire safety and preparedness.

ANY residents who have a question for Mitchell Shire Council, or want to learn more about community safety or fire preparedness, are being encouraged to attend a free community barbecue to be held at Tallarook outdoor pool on Wednesday.

The event will give residents the chance to chat with council staff, while representatives from the CFA and Victoria Police will be on hand to provide valuable information about preparing for the fire season and community safety.

There will also be free activities for children including a jumping castle, face painting and giant Jenga and Connect Four, as well as a youth ‘chill zone’ featuring blow-up chairs, an acoustic artist, a charging station and information on youth services and programs.

Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said council has focused on being more transparent with their community.

‘‘If you’ve got a question for council, want to make a suggestion or want more information about any of our services or events, the community barbecue is a great way of going about it,’’ she said.

‘‘Being in a high fire risk area, it’s also a great opportunity to catch up with emergency service personnel and have a chat to them about preparing your properties for the upcoming fire season, as well as finding out about any measures you can take to enhance safety in the community.’’

CFA community education officer Matt Ahern said the meeting was a great opportunity for people to speak with their local brigade about fire preparation.

‘‘Events like these also show that the brigade is very much local people with the safety of their community in mind,’’ he said.

The Tallarook Community Barbecue is from 5pm to 7pm on December 6 at the Tallarook outdoor pool, 20 Upper Goulburn Rd.

Vegetarian and gluten-free barbecue options will be available upon request.
