Brochure outlines gas gun restrictions

Now that fire restrictions are in place for the North East Fire district, the Country Fire Authority is reminding people that gas powered scare guns require a permit.

CFA operations officer Peter Bell said during the declared Fire Danger Period there are things you can and cannot do and on days of Total Fire Ban, when fires in the open air are legally restricted, this includes the use of gas-powered scare guns.

Fruit growers may not be aware of the requirements to operate gas-powered scare guns during the declared fire-danger period.

The CFA requires users of gas-powered scare guns, during the declared Fire Danger Period, to hold what is known as a Schedule 14 permit.

‘‘We have, in the past, had instances where fire has started from the use of gas-scare guns and we wish to take a proactive approach to help people understand their obligations and more importantly, minimise the risk of fire and the potential damage and heartache that a fire could cause,’’ duty officer Mr Bell said.

‘‘Placement of the equipment is critical and people need to be vigilant, making sure devices are positioned away from long, dry grass to help lessen the chance of a fire starting.’’

Permit applications are available online from the following link at the CFA Website: www.cfa.vic.gov.au/warnings-restrictions/fire-danger-period-permits/ and can be lodged directly with CFA District 22 Headquarters at 205 Numurkah Rd, Shepparton.

Permit applications can be applied for to cover the whole of the Fire Danger Period. It is, however, worth noting the gas-powered scare guns cannot be used on days of Total Fire Ban.

CFA has a publication that details what people can or cannot do during the Fire Danger Period and on days of Total Fire Ban.

The brochure also covers other requirements that will help the general public during this period.
