Archies art in eyes of beholders

A group from the Seymour and District Art Society headed to Geelong on Saturday to view the finalists in the recent Archibald Prize portrait competition.

Aspiring Formula 1 driver and leading local artist Alan Brown negotiated the extremely wet and windy conditions to move the group safely to Geelong and back.

It shows the major differences in the approach to art where there was a unanimous agreement by the members that the painting judged to be the winner was possibly one of the worst among the 43 finalists.

However there was a similar agreement that the one voted by the packing room was indeed worth a lot of merit.

As part of the day out Alan Brown also took the members on a tour of Geelong and only got lost once.

The group commented that the trip was worthwhile even if it proved that art was in the eye of the beholder.
