The Victorian Government is making both the Mitchell Shire and Strathbogie councils more transparent and accountable, according to the Minister for Local Government Marlene Kairouz.
Ms Kairouz said the Victorian Government is enabling proper public scrutiny by making more information available to residents and directing more decisions to be made in in open council meetings.
The latest data was recently launched for the Know Your Council website, which provides information on a broad range of performance data — including planning permits, financial performance, roads, governance and waste collection — for Victoria’s 79 local government authorities.
Council results are added annually, and are accompanied by commentary for each council to explain their results. These results can be compared to results from previous years and other similar councils.
The website gives ratepayers better insight into the way their council operates, and allows residents and businesses to compare their council’s performance to previous years, and other similar councils. Launched in 2015, the website has helped establish clear trends for areas of strength and services in need of improvement.
Ms Kairouz said the Victorian Government is making councils more accountable and transparent to the ratepayers they represent.
‘‘Know Your Council is a great resource for all things local government, and includes important information on the function of councils, election information, key contacts and news from across the sector,’’ she said.
‘‘This latest round of data will allow ratepayers to better monitor how their council is performing now — compared to previous years and other councils.’’
Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said Council is committed to being more open and transparent with the community and that Know Your Council helps achieve this goal.
‘‘The website is a good way for people to keep up to date with how Mitchell is performing on key indicators that are measured by every Victorian Council,’’ she said.
‘‘You can also see how Mitchell’s results compare to previous years and how Mitchell compares to other large rural municipalities and Victoria as a whole.
‘‘While each Council is different, the Know Your Council information provides an indication on how we are performing against several service benchmarks as well as our financial performance and sustainability.’’
