Club coach David Cartwright and Kyabram club champion Rob George.

ROB George has taken out the Kyabram club championship for the first time.

George defeated club coach David Cartwright with a brilliant performance in the 25-16 victory.

The win has added meaning for George with the club championship trophy named after his grandfather Charles.

George’s grandmother Iris created the award in memory of her husband following his death.

George was pleased with the victory, but the humble winner was happy to enjoy it without added fuss.

‘‘It’s nice to win it, but I’m just trying to keep it a bit quiet,’’ George said.

The opening ends of the match were tight, however once George made his breakthrough he lept ahead of Cartwright to record a great victory as both players are in stirling form.

‘‘It was close at the start and then I managed to build a bit of a lead and then just kept it going,’’ he said.

In sweltering heat, a solid crowd turned out to enjoy the contest between two of the competition’s most damaging skips.

George skipped his rink to a scintillating one-shot victory against Shepparton Park coach Mark Ryan prior to the break, as well as also claiming Nagambie’s Brett Spargo as one of his scalps.

He is looking forward to taking on the Goulburn Valley Bowls Division’s best players when Champion of Champions action begins on Sunday, January 21.

But for all the individual glory, George’s aims are to help Kyabram progress deep into this year’s finals series.

‘‘In pennant we’ve been going okay, we’re up there on the ladder sitting at second I think, but we’ve just got to make sure we keep in the top four and need to start beating top sides like East Shepp and Shepp Golf,’’ George said.

With George and Cartwright in strong form, Kyabram has its chance to take on the reigning premier Shepparton Golf when GVBD action resumes on Saturday.
