James Milne was beaming on Saturday when he landed a massive 1.24 metre Murray cod near Gilmartin Beach at Tocumwal.
The Murchison resident had been fishing for about four hours without any luck and was just about to pack up when he hooked the Murray monster.
‘‘I felt a heavy tug on the line and then saw this long silver fish in the water,’’ Mr Milne said.
‘‘I drove the boat closer and was shocked at how big it was.
‘‘It took about five minutes to reel it into the beach.
‘‘I didn’t lift it out of the water, just took a few photos in the shallows and then released it.
‘‘It was unreal, I was calling my dad who loves fishing and boasting how big it was.
‘‘It’s amazing how you go from nothing all day to a massive cod.’’
Mr Milne is a keen angler and said it was sheer chance he caught anything at all.
‘‘We only came up to Tocumwal to visit friends and just decided at the last minute to take advantage of the hot weather by going fishing. It’s by far the biggest fish I’ve ever caught.
‘‘I try and fish as much as I can and don’t really fish along the Murray, so after Saturday I might start coming up here more often.’’
