38,000 new sleepers for Oaklands line

January 10, 2018

Sleepers are being replaced to ensure the integrity of the Oaklands to Benalla track and the safety of the trains that run on them.

A massive 38,000 timber sleepers will be replaced by steel sleepers on the Oaklands to Benalla rail way line starting this week.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) will roll out track upgrade works using Yarrawonga as a centre point.
ARTC’s General Manager of Asset Management, Brian Green said that works will begin on Tuesday, January 8 2018 at 6am and run through to Tuesday, April 3 at 6pm.
“38,000 steel sleepers will replace timber sleepers to ensure the integrity of the track and the safety of the trains that run on them” Mr Green said.
“Works will be rolled out in sections starting from Oaklands to Yarrawonga, then from Yarrawonga to Benalla.”
Trucks and heavy machinery will be entering and exiting the site and the public is urged to take extra care while these important works are carried out.
Level crossings will not be closed but traffic control will be in place to ensure a safe working environment.
“We know that these works will impact on the public and we thank them for their patience,” Mr Green said.
“Works will take place between 6am and 6pm and while some weekend work is involved, there will be no night time work involved in the delivery of this project.
“Schools are still on holidays and families are on the move so we urge people to take extra care at train crossings so everyone can stay safe over the festive period.”
