Tocumwal Golf & Bowls Club held its third annual Victorian 2-Person Ambrose Championship at the weekend.
The event saw a record 236 players contest the two-day event from over 60 different golf clubs across Australia.
The field was split in half giving all players the opportunity to post their scores over the entire 36 hole Championship Courses.
Scoring was hot from the outset.
Local golfer Steffi Vogel and Sophie Crouch of Mildura posted the best score for the weekend on the Captain’s Course on Saturday, a 10 under 63 which gave them a seven shot lead going into the second round.
They extended that lead on Sunday, shooting a solid five under 68 to take out the scratch award by 13 shots from Yarrawonga ladies Ros Gray and Sue Dawes.
In the handicap division it was Numurkah’s Julie Daniel and Sharon Cruikshank who took the honours. With a total of 133.5 net over the two days they were successful by a single shot from Tocumwal members Anne Beveridge and Alison Southwell.
In the men’s event the early pace was set by Shepparton and Goulburn Murray representatives Kyle and Simon Michel with an impressive 60 off the stick. This gave them a one shot lead from local golfers Caleb Bovalina and Chris Tomlinson.
A further shot back were Ray Seeney and Jayar Martin of Yarrawonga.
With four shots separating the top six pairs going into Sunday’s last round, competition was going to be close, given the wind was picking up and scoring is generally tougher on the Captain’s Course.
Posting the day’s best 63 around the Captain’s Course, Bovalina and Tomlinson were able to overtake Simon and Kyle to successfully defend their 2017 title and record a two shot victory.
Bovalina and Tomlinson’s total of 20 under par for the 36 holes was the best recorded in the event’s short history.
Winning the Handicap section for the men were members from Gisborne Golf Club in James Linberg and Glen Pearce with a total of 125.5 net over the two days. This was the closest event for the weekend as it was decided on a countback from Seeney and Martin.
The weekend was a successful one thanks to the support received from Chris and Kathy Garnaut, De Bortoli Wines and Tocumwal Golf and Early Settlers Resorts for their sponsorship of the Nearest the Pins on each day.
All competitors were also supplied with fruit and water supplied by Mantos Fruit of Cobram.
The club is looking to another successful event next year but with the event very close to capacity this year spots will be highly sought after.
