Elvis Presley’s private jet up for sale

By AAP Newswire

Hound Dog, a private jet once owned by music legend Elvis Presley, may no longer look high class but is still attracting attention in a disused corner of an airfield in New Mexico where it is up for sale.

The Lockheed Jetstar, once a favourite among wealthy executives and singers such as Frank Sinatra, last transported "The King" at the height of his fame before passing into disuse until being sold last year to an owner who has decided to sell it on.

"Elvis's jet has been privately owned for more than 35 years, becoming a tourist attraction where it sat on a runway in Roswell, New Mexico in the US," auction house IronPlanet said in a statement.

The 1962 vintage Lockheed Jetstar has lost its lustrous coat of paint as well as its Pratt and Whitney JT12 engines, and its cockpit has been stripped of many of its instruments. But hints of bygone glory still linger.

"Custom private jet personally owned by Elvis Presley, the late American singer, complete with red velvet seats, gold plated accents, and red plush carpet," the online auctioneer's statement said.

Bidders can make offers until the auction ends on July 27, IronPlanet, which specialises in selling heavy machinery such as earth-moving trucks and cranes, said.

"The jet is the only one of the three planes belonging to Elvis Presley, which is still privately owned, while the other two are owned by the Graceland estate in Memphis, Tennessee," the statement said.

All Federal Aviation Administration documents and invoices showing previous ownership by Presley and his father Vernon, are included in the sale, the auction house said.

Among the documents provided is a copy of the mortgage Presley and his father signed to a value of $US840,000.
