KATIE Kim understands people in country towns aren’t often aren’t interested in classical music — but she is on a mission to change that.

Katie is bringing a flute show to Heathcote — her former home town — and will perform alongside Peter Sheridan, a long-time teacher of hers at Monash University and a big name in the flute world.

The performance will be held at 7pm at St John’s Anglican Church on High St on Friday, February 23.

Katie, who now lives in Bendigo, said the performance will include different sorts of flutes.

“It is mostly going to be flute duets where Peter and I will play our music together, however sometimes Peter may go into his solo work and I may go into mine,” Katie said.

“I will be playing a ‘C flute’ which is a more common style flute and Peter will be playing his ‘low flute’ which allows him to hit note ranges, almost like a cello.”

The pair encountered each other in Melbourne while Katie was studying her music honors.

“We played a lot of music together and he treated me more like a professional than a student. This will be our first real performance together and I am really excited.”

Katie understands that bringing classical music to a country town could prove to be tough. But she is keen to break down some pre-conceived ideas.

“I know a lot of people think, ‘why would you go and play classical music in a country town’, but I think if people come down they will enjoy it.

“It has that perception of being boring but I am trying to reach out and break that.”

Entry to the show is $20 for adults and $8 for children, bookings can be made by calling Katie on 0406 106 794.
