Bill Sykes will re-contest the seat of Benalla in November’s election, with the state member successfully nominating preselection.

Bill Sykes will re-contest the seat of Benalla in November’s election, with the state member successfully nominating preselection.

The National’s spokesperson for police and emergency services, Dr Sykes was selected to represent the party unopposed.

‘‘Put simply, it is a case of unfinished business,’’ Dr Sykes said following the announcement.

‘‘I and my staff have worked hard and learned a lot over the past three years.

‘‘We have been able to help people and communities successfully deal with a wide range of issues.’’

But despite many successes in the first term, Dr Sykes said there remained a great deal to be done.

He indicated securing a ‘‘fair deal’’ from the decommissioning of Lake Mokoan and adequate funding for neighbourhood houses were near the top of the list.

‘‘I am seeking to be elected, so I can continue to work hard to ensure a fair deal for country Victorians, to achieve common sense solutions and to ensure accountability by the government.’’

Welcoming Dr Sykes’ pre-selection, state party leader Peter Ryan said the Benalla politician had become an outspoken advocate for the region, describing him as ‘‘one of the most effective members of parliament in Victoria’’.
