Australian barrister, human rights and refugee advocate and author Julian Burnside will be in Shepparton in August to speak to guests at a Leading from Within lunch.
Mr Burnside will share his story and answer any questions people may have about his interest in asylum seekers and refugee issues or his work as an author or practising barrister.
The ticketed event will be hosted by Leading from Within president Bill O’Kane and Marian Lawless and will include entertainment provided by the Shepparton Theatre Arts Group, with a preview of the group’s new show, Wicked.
Mr O’Kane said the event was to help with much-needed fundraising for the Leading from Within program.
‘‘The program needs considerable financial support to continue the work of assisting recovery in people who have suffered from any form of trauma,’’ he said.
‘‘It is the only program of its kind in this region.’’
The program was established following the suicides of two local young people and an adult almost 20 years ago.
The organisation aims to help in recovery from trauma and adversity and, through recovery and leadership development, encourage contribution to the wellbeing of others in the community.
Tickets to the lunch are $250 a person with the cost being fully tax deductable.
‘‘If anyone wants to pay more or make a donation even if they do not wish to attend the lunch, they are very welcome,’’ Mr O’Kane said.
For more information or to buy tickets, phone the program co-ordinators Patrick and Jenny O’Connell on 58211295.
