Moira Shire Council remains committed to recycling, despite the global industry shake-up.
Shire community general manager Sally Rice said residents should continue recycling as normal with Moira’s collection services remaining unchanged.
‘‘Moira residents have achieved excellent results with organics and recycling separation and this positions us well during this shake-up,’’ Ms Rice said.
‘‘Some recycling centres are threatening closure and some councils have been faced with a termination of their recycling service.’’
Ms Rice said the current pressures were due to changes to the global recycling market, particularly China imposing tighter restrictions on the quality of recyclable materials.
‘‘Moira residents have consistently achieved some of the lowest bin contamination rates in the state and this helps keep the end products clean and saleable in commodity markets,’’ she said.
‘‘These changes are not unique to Victoria and are impacting recycling worldwide. We are working closely with our contractors and the state government to keep up to date on this matter.
‘‘Council is reassuring residents that there is no change to any of our kerbside collection services and we will keep the community updated on the progress of this matter.’’
