Mulwala Netball

By Emily Moretto

A Grade

Mulwala 50 defeated by Barooga 55

A grade fell short in a close and tough encounter with Barooga, fighting for 8th spot on the ladder, with two new young guns, Hollie and Tess McNamara, stepping up to play senior netball and fitting into the team nicely.

The Lions started well and matched the Hawks goal for goal in the first quarter, trailing by one at the first break.

A strong second quarter saw the Lions continue to keep pace with the Hawks showing determination and some smart play in the goal ring.

Jordy and Steph worked overtime in goals with Grace, Hollie and Tess feeding them well, whilst Brodie, Tayce, Cara and Jess Thomson had their work cut out in defence.

However, a few silly errors in the third quarter saw Barooga take the lead, forcing the Lions to play catch up in the last quarter.

A great game with some excellent passages of play and the last quarter one of the Lion’s best.

Awards: Foodworks Top Lion – Grace Thomson, MFNC Rewards Card – Steph Hammond, One Zach – Jordy McCarthy.

B Grade

Mulwala 46 defeated Barooga 34

The B grade girls had another terrific win against a physically tough team. They fought all day, with Teagan and Téa leading the team with accuracy and rebounding balls in the goal ring.

The defence end was upheld through Lisa and Emme, with the hard work in the mid court by Tayla, Shanny, Georgia and Emma creating turnovers.

Awards: Foodworks Top Lion – Teagan Panter, MFNC Rewards Card – Tayla McNamara, Judds Yarrawonga – Emme Shand.

C Grade

Mulwala 25 drew with Barooga 25

What a great effort the girls put in today against Barooga, in what was a must win game to keep their finals hopes alive.

Defenders put plenty of pressure on Barooga causing some great turn overs.

The mid court players all brought the ball down the court well and the goalers finished it off nicely with their shooting accuracy.

The Lions went into the last quarter 5 goals up and confident of a win.

However Barooga scored a few quick goals that Mulwala couldn’t match, resulting is some costly errors as the girls dropped their heads.

Keep fighting girls and show everyone how big the Lion hearts are.

Awards: Foodworks Top Lion – Heidi Magro, MFNC Rewards Card – Nic Christophersen, Judds Yarrawonga – Jess Barton.

C Res Grade

With the scores goal for goal in the first half the Lions needed to dig deep and ramp up the intensity. Mulwala showed their consistency and determination taking off in the 3rd quarter to win convincingly in the end. Great team work by all.

The Lions started well scoring six unanswered goals in a confident approach to another must-win game, going into the first break with an eight goal lead.

In the second, Mulwala ramped up the intensity, applying excellent defensive pressure across the court, turning the ball over and driving into attack to convert.

The Lions worked hard to build a 20 goal lead going into the half time break.

In the second half the girls continued to work hard running out convincing winners and climbing another spot on the ladder as we approach the finals series.

Mulwala 23 defeated by Barooga 24

A much needed win didn’t work out for the Lions this week.

The girls had a 2 goal lead in all 3 quarters but the Hawks’ fitness and determination secured the game for them.

The first 3 quarters showed how strong the under 15s side can be but they will need to work on maintaining their intensity and improving their basic skills as they approach the finals series.

Cheyenne and Freya’s defensive pressure was what kept the girls in the game, as they improve immensely each week.

Lara’s strong drives to the ring were also impressive and she was one of the few who didn’t give up the entire day.

Great effort girls, we will continue to work on the basics so that we can come away with these close games.

Awards: Foodworks Top Lion – Freya Fletcher, YMGCR – Lara Langford, Judds Yarrawonga – Cheyenne Nixon.

Mulwala 3 defeated by Barooga 33

The Lions never dropped their heads once even when they had their set 4 on the bench in the second quarter.

Everyone fought for the ball however Barooga were just too strong.

Need to work on the front cuts but in time it will get there.

The coaches are so proud of everyone and how all players coped with the changes each quarter with making a change to 4 positions each time.

Training this week will be a good hard sesh where the Lions can improve on the little errors. Top effort girls.

Awards: Foodworks Top Lion – Jess Linehan, YMGCR – Bel Walshe, La Porchetta – Paige Murfitt.

This week the girls were up for a challenge, starting the game slowly, they managed to come out strong with tight defence.

Both Maisee and Milla stepped up this week and guided the team in defence, keeping their players limited to the ring.

With plenty of determination, little Emily didn’t give up despite the score and she managed to have perfect passes through the centre, and topped off the game with her first goal for the year in GA. Learning new skills every week, and training hard, the girls are so close to coming home with a win, they should be super proud of their efforts.

Awards: Foodworks Top Lion – Myley McGlynn, YMGCR – Emily Linehan, Travel & Cruise Yarrawonga – Jemma Riches.
