Benalla Hockey Club is looking forward to another season with many new faces in the black and orange.
Taking the field on Saturday with several of the club’s juniors trialling, and being selected, for representative teams in the Junior Country Championships (GVHA) and Junior State Championships (NE Knights).
Liana Turner, Thomas Hill, and Alex and Evan Dowe were all selected for these teams.
The Tigers will field a new under-10’s Sixes team against Mooroopna at 9am Saturday morning.
Coach Marty Gillies and assistant coach Willow Plex believe the kids will enjoy utilising the skills they have learnt through the Hook in2 Hockey and Junior Development programs in a competitive environment.
That the game is to be played on Shepparton’s synthetic surface, adds to the excitement the kids are feeling.
The realignment of age groups has meant GVHA is now offering four junior competitions, with the intermediary sixes competition no longer being run.
The club’s remaining juniors will combine with several new players to make up the Tigers’ under-16 side.
They will also take on Mooroopna in Shepparton, from 11am.
Coach Evan Dowe and assistant coach Stephen Dowe are looking to build on from last year.
“We always had a great team ethic and never gave up. There were also a couple of games there at the end, where everything else started to click,’’ Dowe said.
The B-women’s side have the bye this week. The B-men’s team, under the guidance of coaches Marty Gillies and Dave McIntyre, will begin the defence of their premiership title against Euroa, at 2pm Saturday.
That game will be played at home at the Rupe Cheetham Hockey Field in Benalla.
Training is Thursday night, starting 5pm for juniors and 6pm for seniors. New players for all teams are welcome.
