Blighty to miss stars in first home game

April 13, 2018

Blighty defender Matt Barker will come into the senior side tomorrow.

An undermanned Blighty will have their first game on home soil for 2018 when they take on Tocumwal in round two of the Picola & District League season tomorrow.

Missing from the Redeyes line-up will be captain Lenny Clarke, as well as vice-captains Sam Singleton and Tom Draffin.

Also unavailable are Tom Dowling, Ryan Chadderton, Beau Close and recruit Louis Clarke.

Playing-coach Jack Tyndall said the side would still be full of talent despite some key players missing.

‘‘In the original draw before the North-West and South-East (leagues) combined we were scheduled for a bye in round two, so some blokes had already organised to travel,’’ Tyndall said.

‘‘We’ll have Rob Resuggan come into the side and will likely bring in Brett Napier and Matt Barker as well.

‘‘We may also have Blake Charlton come up to seniors this week. Blake, Nappies (Napier) and Barks (Barker) have been training all summer so it will be a good reward for all their hard work.’’

Tomorrow’s clash marks Dane Maxwell’s first game against his former side after switching to Blighty in the off-season.

Maxwell and Matt Jackson (Finley) headline Blighty’s recruits, while another former Finley player in Jed Brain was in top form last week.

Brain, the reigning Pearce medallist, kicked eight goals against Katunga with the Redeyes winning by 19 points to start the year.

‘‘With two of our starting mids in Lenny (Clarke) and Singo (Singleton) out, Jed may have to play more time in the middle this week,’’ Tyndall said.

‘‘But we’ll also get to see him play plenty of minutes in the forward 50 with Matt Jackson, Tom Druitt, Kyel Bain and myself all able to swap into the midfield.

‘‘The delivery to Jed from Matt (Jackson) last week was unreal. He’s (Jackson) one of the best kicks in the PDFL so we’ll be hoping to get the ball in his hands as often as possible.’’

Despite missing seven key players the Redeyes should still get the job done against Tim Garlick’s Tocumwal side which lost by 75 points in their opening round on Good Friday.

Selection: Blighty by seven goals.
