Strathmerton travelled to Deniliquin in perfect conditions for the season opener, but it was not the start to the year the club was hoping for.
From the first bounce the new-look Deniliquin outfit looked formidable, winning centre clearances and moving the ball efficiently, kicking the first five goals of the game.
The Strathmerton coaches scrambled to swing changes through the middle and managed to turn the game, with the Bulldogs kicking the next four goals, going into the quarter-time break one goal down.
New recruits Tom Campbell and Zach Betson where instrumental up forward with good supply coming from further up the ground.
Strathmerton’s midfielders worked hard under a new ruckman and battled well to hold Deniliquin.
From quarter-time the game became a goal-for-goal arm wrestle, with neither team able to break away.
Strathmerton finally hit the front late in the final quarter but was unable to hold on to the lead with Deniliquin kicking away again to win by a goal.
