Finley High School’s open netball team has won their way to the State Championships after recently claiming the 2018 Riverina Championship.
As part of the inter school competitions, the Riverina region consisted of 20 schools including from Wagga, Albury, Griffith and Deniliquin.
Starting in the four pool stages, FHS won all their pool games comfortably, allowing them to qualify for the semi-finals where they defeated Billabong by seven goals.
In the grand final played last month it was FHS defeating Deniliquin by five goals.
This qualified Finley to represent the Riverina region at the State Championship at Wollongong in September.
The last time the open team qualified for the State Championship was in 2002.
FHS also found luck in the under 15s competition by storming into the grand final earlier in the year.
Within this competition there was 24 teams competing for the title.
The girls competed in a tournament in Wagga and won all of their games on the day, before losing to Albury High School in the grand final.
Finley High School netball coach Di Sexton said it was a huge achievement for a school the size of Finley High.
‘‘For Finley to come first in the open competition and second in the under 15s is an amazing effort.
‘‘Netball is a dominant sport within this region and many of the schools that we are competing against have significantly larger populations,’’ Sexton said.
