Fifteen former Tocumwal football legends gathered on Saturday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the thirds 1978 premiership victory.

The reunion marked an important milestone for the club — the only Tocumwal thirds side to win a premiership in either Murray or Picola Leagues.

The club used Saturday as an opportunity to also celebrate the 1979 thirds side which finished runners-up to Cobram.

Current and former club legends gathered at Tocumwal Recreation Reserve to reminisce about the victory and an opportunity to catch up with old friends.

Club president Mal Hart said there was great interaction between the thirds of old and the current junior players.

‘‘Last year’s fourths premiers helped with catering by bringing the food out and setting up the tables, so they were able to converse and interact,’’ he said.

‘‘When we were deciding who should help out on the day we chose to focus on the younger players.

‘‘We knew the reunion players would be interested in the younger players and what they’ve been able to achieve; they have something in common.

‘‘The kids gained a better understanding of what football was like back in their day.’’

In 1978, on a hot September afternoon, the Bloods were victorious over the Deniliquin Rams, winning in an arm wrestle by six points — Tocumwal 5.5 (35) to Deniliquin 4.5 (29).

Mr Hart said the 1978 winners were important to the club.

‘‘Clubs can move on pretty quickly, but we still have that paraphernalia and photographs we keep showing everybody.

‘‘There were interviews and yarns going about all day; remembering what happened in the grand finals.

‘‘They’re unlikely to meet as a group again, so decided to make the most of it.

‘‘I’m pretty sure they hadn’t won a game up to the half way mark of that season, so to make the grand final and then win by a goal is extraordinary.

‘‘Unfortunately we couldn’t get all of them here, but to have 15 come along is a great number.

‘‘They were celebrating as well as commemorating; the whole event went really well.’’
