A fire in the early hours of Sunday morning has caused damage to popular Benalla eatery Georgina’s Restaurant on Bridge St.
Investigators, who were only able to enter the building about 9am Sunday morning after the it was confirmed to be safe, are unsure as to the cause of the fire and still in the process of establishing what happened.
CFA Benalla’s Shane Nedeljkovic confirmed that the fire was first reported at 12.25am on Sunday morning.
Thanks to a quick response the fire was brought under control before any structural damage could be caused to the building.
Staff member Jade Kirk, who runs the front-of-house operations at Georgina’s, said everyone involved with the restaurant was ‘‘completely guttered and absolutely devastated’’.
‘‘It honestly feels like our hearts have been ripped out, but we are so very grateful to the amazing people who have offered support, called, messaged and have been there for us all,’’ Jade said.
‘‘While we are struggling with the reality of what has happened we are so incredibly appreciative to those people who have been there for us now and will continue to support us into the future.
‘‘We cannot thank the CFA enough for their hard work to contain the fire and for their care, support and help during and after the fire.
‘‘We also have to thank all those that were there to help and support us on Saturday night.
‘‘This is not the end of Georgina’s Restaurant — ‘our’ beautiful lady will be back.’’
