Blighty A Grade stay near the top in 2010s

The Blighty Netball Club has had a successful decade on the court but just came up short with the elusive premiership title in the 2010s.

Blighty started the decade strongly, finishing second on the ladder in 2010, making their way to the grand final before losing to league juggernaut Mathoura 45 to 39.

However, the side took a turn for the worst in 2011 finishing with only three wins for the season.

The club followed up with a strong 2012, securing a top three finish, narrowly losing in the preliminary finals.

In 2013, Blighty only narrowly lost by six goals in their qualifying final match against Deni Rovers, again finishing third on the ladder.

The Blighty A grade side fell out of finals contention in 2014, falling short of an appearance on percentage despite tying with Jerilderie and the Deni Rovers on 36 points.

The next three years offered fine form from the Blighty squad, finishing third each year.

In 2015 the squad fell to a slick Tocumwal in the qualifying finals.

Blighty were no match for Strathmerton in the semi-finals, getting beaten 59 to 36.

Facing Deni Rovers in the qualifying finals in 2017 again ended in disappointment, Deni Rovers 62 to Blighty 53.

A change in league fixtures in 2018 brought good luck for the side with an impressive 13 game winning streak before unfortunately falling to a prolific Deni Rovers A grade side.

The club’s last year of the decade was not so kind, only managing four wins for the season.

In reflection of a relatively successful 10 years, Blighty Netball Club selected their team of the decade.

The team is as follows:

Suzie Falls GK, GD: A Blighty junior player who was part of a premiership team. Uncanny ability to read the play to gain intercepts. Always aggressive to the ball. A successful junior coach and a league best and fairest winner.

Eliza Eastman GD: A clean netballer with outstanding rebounding skills. Makes the game look easy with her ability to read the play and turn the ball over, which sets up opportunities down the court.

Nat Tremble WD (Captain): Turned her basketball knowledge into a defensive force that has no bounds. Creates drive and direction down the court. A natural leader who is a great role model for younger players

Demi Blake C: Spent a lot of her time in juniors at Blighty. Exceptionally quick and has magic passing ability. Able to change the outcome of a game and never gives up.  A successful junior coach and a runner-up in the league best and fairest.

Courtney Barnett WA: A dynamic midcourter with incredible speed and an amazing vertical leap. Could make game saving moves and opponents find it hard to keep up with her. A successful junior coach.

Rhiannan Maxwell GA: Played juniors for Blighty. A commanding presence on the court. Shooting accuracy is outstanding. Her experience playing at higher levels make her a tough opponent. League best and fairest winner.

Tess Plattfuss GS: A true Blighty local who played up through the ranks and was part of a premiership team. Accurate shot and unstoppable on her day. Can turn her hand to defence just as easily. League’s Rising Star award winner.

Interchange: Kate Wren Mid Court: Controls the pace and flow of the game easily. Has a wise netball head and is a natural leader on the court. Her opponents never get an easy pass and she can run all day.  A very settling influence.

Sogan Wahanui GK, GD: Part of the Under 17s Premiership side.  Can play both ends of the court but far more dominant in defence. A beautifully clean player who controls the defensive end with ease.

Molly Cochrane GK, GS: Another player who came through the Blighty ranks and part of a premiership team. Coached several teams throughout the years. Versatile player who could play both ends of the court with ease.

Georgie Burke Mid Court: Played majority of her junior netball at Blighty and was a premiership player.  A versatile midcourter with a fast drive who can always find space around the court. Possesses a natural netball brain.

Judy Plattfuss GK, GS (Coach): Another Blighty local who has played over 600 games for the club. Coached many successful teams and has a wealth of experience. Capable of playing both ends of the court and always a strong presence.

Nat Tremble has been named as captain of Blighty’s team of the decade.
