Secure your plates on Saturday

By Alex Gretgrix

ENSURING your number plates are secure and safe from the threat of theft is the aim for the Echuca West Neighbourhood Watch as they hold their next Safe Plate Day on Saturday.

Held five times a year, the days are designed to reduce the number of number plates stolen by securing them with one-way screws.

After the success of previous days, Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator Len Wills hopes this time will be better again.

"We swapped screws on more than 100 cars last time," Len said.

"I've purchased about 3000 screws so we're hoping we'll help a lot more people."

Although the team has been in action for a few years now, the thefts haven't let up.

"People are getting tools and other things stolen, plates are just the half of it," he said.

"All the burnt out cars that have appeared in the paper recently seem to have all their plates stolen, so the problem isn't going away.

"We're encouraging people to lock it or loose it."

The Safe Plate Day will be held in the Echuca Bunnings car park from 9am until 2pm, but times may vary.

"We always start a bit earlier and we're happy to stay around later if we can make sure we help as many people as possible," Len said.
