Dancing with the Stars not going ahead

By Daniel Hughes

It was around this time last year than 10 local personalities were finalising their routines for the annual Biralee Dancing with the Stars competition and fundraiser.

This year, however, no-one will be stretching, gliding, twirling or leaping in front of a live audience because of Coronavirus restrictions.

Biralee Preschool president Jane Harris said the loss of a great social evening also means the loss of a significant portion of funding for the preschool.

‘‘Dancing with the Stars has so many benefits for Biralee and the broader community,’’ Mrs Harris said.

‘‘It raises upwards of $15,000 in one night and, for a community run organisation, that is a hugely beneficial figure.

‘‘In years gone by it has enabled us to replace ageing technology, upgrade our facilities and invest in educational resources.

‘‘But it also serves to bring the Finley and district community together in a way unlike any other event.

‘‘We have had teachers dancing with publicans, farmers dancing with entrepreneurs and hairdressers dancing with police officers.

‘‘Our first event was held in 2016. This would have been our fifth year but instead we have some exciting projects on the horizon.

‘‘We are very sad not to be hosting DWTS 2020, but we have our eye on the next crop of community-minded dancers for 2021.’’

Mrs Harris said while the event cannot be held, the Biralee community would welcome community support in other ways.

‘‘We are taking a small break from fundraising at the moment and will get back into it when things start to ease and our projects need funding.

‘‘That said, Biralee is able to accept tax-deductible donations and we welcome any support offered to advance our service in early childhood education and out of school hours care.

‘‘What we would really appreciate is some support on our committee.

‘‘We will have a number of our longer-standing committee members standing down at our next AGM and we would love to see some people from the broader community come on board to contribute their skills to the running of Biralee.

‘‘In particular we are seeking people with financial management skills or those with experience in committee executive positions.’’
