There will continue to be a bit of festive cheer in the region this year thanks to the Berrigan Lions Club.
The club has donated $1000 to help purchase ingredients for Christmas hampers, to be distributed by Moira Foodshare to families in need.
The Foodshare program supports local farmers, single parent families, people who are out of work or individuals and families who experience tough times.
Its capacity to help has been diminished this year because of the Coronavirus pandemic, with fewer people able to donate.
Moira Foodshare coordinator Alan Petrie says that's why this support from Berrigan Lions is so welcomed.
“The Berrigan Lions have been a wonderful supporter of Moira Foodshare for many years, and this donation in particular will ensure our family food packages and annual Christmas hamper preparations are completed successfully.”
The donation was presented to the group by Lions Ian and Inara Fox, who have also volunteered to help Moira Foodshare distribute the hampers later in the year.
“Berrigan Lions is pleased to support another local community charity, particularly during these difficult times,” said Mrs Fox, who is Berrigan Lions president.
“The volunteers of Moira Foodshare do a wonderful job in providing food relief and we want to support their efforts in any way we can.
“We donated $1000 for the Christmas hampers, which is the same amount we have donated each year. We also donated money toward the purchase of a forklift when the organisation was initially established.
“We currently have about 10 to 12 families in Berrigan are who are in need of our help which is why it is so important this service continues.”
Mrs Fox said the distribution of hampers will be a challenge this year, but one all involved are willing to take on.
“We have organised with Alan, when the hampers are ready, to meet him in Barooga. He will pass the bags to us to take back to Berrigan,” Mrs Fox said.
“We bring them back to our place and keep them safely stored and do the deliveries on behalf of Lions, Berrigan Red Cross and the Berrigan Shire Council.”
